Minehead in the 70's

Postby Bedfords » Fri Jul 29, 2011 9:07 pm

Ahh I remember well the 5 hour drive every year from Manchester to Minehead every year in my dads cortina, am radio fading in and out under every bridge.
Things I remember.
The swimming pool with the window into the princess lounge.
The dining room where everybody would clap when something was dropped.
The monorail
The outside swimming pool.
The boating lake with the ant infested central Island.
Jumping in the outside pool because I was covered in ants from the island !
The smoker room.
The fake storm in the beachcomber bar (I was to young to go in the evening, but I remember going in during the day and they set off the fake storm with the thunder, rain and lightning etc. Great.)
The baby monitoring service (baby crying in chalet ...). Never get away with that now !
The donkey Derby !
Learning to swim in the indoor pool.
Ahh the good old days. Great stuff.
Butlins forever !

Actually I saw the baby crying in chalet sign a lot at Minehead and Skegness this April!

Your memories are very similar to mine, even down to the fact we used to drive from Manchester to Minehead in my dads Cortina!
You get into the groove and do the Push Button Click. YEAH!

cortinas were the most popular car of the time,my dad had a green mk3 and a bronze mk5,can remember the reg plates as well, can remember my dad always took a tool box with him and we had to have it in the back with us behind the seat.we also had a fold down trolley for the luggage, because he didn't want to use the barrow boys.
