Skegness Nostalgia Hi-De-Hi Days

Postby SkegRed » Sun Jan 11, 2009 4:36 pm

l wonder how many Bygone Butlins Forum members where on holiday or working at Butlins in the 50's and 60's possibly before or after those years when Campers were allocated Houses (it depended on which Dining Hall you ate in what Houses you were in).

There were 6 Houses KENT,CONNAUGHT,WINDSOR,CLOUCESTER,WARWICK AND EDINBURGH.
and all Houses had a committee of Campers and a Redcoat as House Captain

House points were given to every Competition and Tournament and at the end of the week the Winning House won the Shield on a Friday Prize giving in the Empress Ballroom, when all competition winners won a Butlin cup, medal and a prize.
All the Redcoats(who were not on duty) used to be there standing in line in front of the Campers, escorting the winners up to the stage and back again, cheering and applauding

When the winner of the Holiday Princess was announced there used to be a rush of about 20 male Redcoats or more to Escort her, lots of fun

You'd have thought it was Manchester United ,Chelsea,Arsenal,Liverpool,Everton,or Aston Villa the Campers were supporting they were so involved and dedicated to their respected Houses

Redcoat Dave Allen the lrish TV comedian, Redcoat Freddie (Parrot Face) Davies, and Richard Starkey, Rock Ballroom,(later to be Ringo Starr) were also in the Skegness Entertainment Teams the 50s and 60s

Ah! Memories ,Memories

Just thought l'd share a few Nostalgic memories long gone(but not forgotten)

Well I've learnt something new from that because I had thought they only had 2 houses, Kent and Glocester. Not that I ever experienced the house system first hand, but it's interesting to know.

It was a whole different world back then wasn't it? However, as far as I'm concerned these are STILL the Hi de Hi days.
