Sorry only just found this thread.

Well my thinking is that we should get as many of us as possible together for a celebration of the 75th at Minehead. There is already another 75th get together being organised over on for Skegness. Some people prefer Skegness because it is the first camp that opened 75 years ago.

While I can see the logic in that, I personally prefer Minehead because it still looks much more like a traditional Butlins and in fact much more like Skegness itself would have when it opened. Skegness on the other hand, like Bognor, has changed almost beyond recognition, sadly.

Now to some people that may not matter but to me it does, so I will be celebrating the 75th anniversary at Minehead.

So if you'd like to join me please for now just post a message here to say so, and if you have any particular ideas for dates put them here too. I am personally waiting to hear what Butlins has planned as I think they might be planning special celebrations for a particular week, in which case I'd like to be there that week. If those official celebrations are only at Skegness I might even change my mind and stay there. I just hope Butlins announce their plans soon as in my opinion they've already left it far too late.

However, maybe if there's a decent number of us going as a group to celebrate we could organise a bit of our own entertainment or activities. Obviously the more people going the bigger and better this could be.

So, who's up for it?

O.K cobber.

Marion (Maid Marion) and myself, would certainly like to join you and many other people who hold the interests of Butlins past and present, close to their hearts. Had heard on the grape vine that there would be a celerbration of 75 years of Butlins (I should certainy think so) and look forward to hearing more in the near future. May your boomerang always return to you. (blunt end first of course).

Great Frank. As you probably know by now the dates for the Minehead celebration break are 4 nights starting March 28th 2011 (although I'm staying 7 nights then going directly from there to Skegness for the next celebration break!)

You'll need a special code apparently to get the £75 price, but the code hasn't yet been made available. Hopefully you'll see it on the forum thread called "Butlins 75th anniversary Premier Club celebration breaks - the dates" very soon.

Hi de Hi and I'll look forward to seeing you there!

Still waiting.

I wouldn't quite describe myself as folky but if I was able to get there I would genuinely love to go to that particular break. I hope to go to a similar one when I get a chance. I quite like folk music and would imagine it would be a fantastic theme for a butlin's break.

Like Pushbutton I wouldn't say I was a grate lover of Folk, but some years ago we provided the camp site security for the Fylde Folk Festival held annually in Fleetwood.
What a great group of people they were a real sense of community, on there return from the festivities in town each night they had a marque set up with food and drinks and the singing and talking went on till the early hours.

On the Butlins music note (pun intended) a couple of years ago we extended our weekly break to include a Soul weekend. Not that I'm into Soul music and the kids were more interested in staying longer, I have to say it was one of the best breaks we have been on entertainment wise.

Probably the only folk song I actually know is this one, which someone sung on a Scout camp when I was 11 years old and for some reason I've never been able to forget it since!

However it wasn't until just a few minutes ago that, prompted by this thread, I decided to google "on ilkley mo by tat" (as I thought it was spelt) and look what I found!

Actually if I'm being honest, the only part I really remembered was the "chorus" bit where it goes "On illkley moor bah tat" 3 times! But I certainly remember the tune.

Now if this isn't proper English culture at its very best, then frankly I don't know what is! ... re=related

Weve done it.

Booked up last weekend at Skegness for the celerbrations at Minehead starting 28th March, 2011. The young lady did her best to book us into Skegness but we said we wanted to go to Minehead because of this strange Australian gentleman (ex pat) and other strange charecters would hopefully be turning up there. She said their reds were looking forward to putting on the old Butlin outfits, including pleated skirts. I said hopefully not the lads. I said there was talk of different competitions including knobbly knees. She said she thought this a good idea, I was about to show her mine when the wife stopped me, spoilsport. Looking forward to seeing who else turns up.

Its all official at last, got my premiership number and paid off the deposit. Yes its getting that close, spoke to a nice chap at Butlins H.Q. and said I hadnt had my number yet, said he would sort it and ring me back, which he did very quickly and gave me my number. I had explained to him about why I needed the number for the 75th celerbration. A friend called David rang me last night to say hes booking up, very interesting chap as he spent many years at Butlins on stage lighting and stage manager. Worked with a lot of well known people. Glad to hear B.M. bear is coming as well.

This is my first time i visit here. I found so many entertaining stuff in your blog, especially its discussion. From the tons of comments on your articles, I guess I am not the only one having all the leisure here! Keep up the good work.
